History

India has been populated since 3500 BC. At that time only the northern part around Ganges and Indus was populated. India became a British colony in 1805. The time of the British Empire has affected India a lot, both culturally and socially. Since the independence of India in 1947 the country has made great effort.

Society

India is a democratic and federal republic with a parliamentary system of government. India consists of 28 states and 7 union territories. The states have their own parliaments and governments while the union territories are administrated from the capital city of New Delhi. There are representative assemblies in cities and villages. The voting age is 21. Because there are a large number of analphabetic people in India they have a system with symbols on the voting papers, each party and candidate have their own symbol.

Human rights

For a long period India had a caste system when the people from the lower castes were oppressed by the higher castes which had great power. The famous Indian man Mahatma Gandhi fought for every Hindu’s right and made great improvements against the caste system. The caste system doesn’t exist anymore, and Gandhi had a great part in that.

Population

The population in India consists of about 1030 million people (2001). The two most common languages that are spoken in India are Hindi and English, but there are also about 400 languages spoken by ethnical minorities.

Religion

About 80% of the population are Hindus; other religions are Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. Hinduism is the religion that affects the Indian society most. Its great culture leads back thousands of years, and everywhere in India you can see temples and other Hindu monuments. The religious Hindus often have a home altar with incense, candles and pictures of the Hindu gods. At this home altar the Hindu pray to their gods and sacrifices food, fruit, flowers and valuable oils.

Education

The lower educational system in India has four levels: prime school for 5 years, upper prime school for 3 years, secondary school for 2 years and upper secondary school for 2 years. In most of the states the prime school is compulsory. Even though the first five years are compulsory only 50% complete those five years. It is more common among girls than boys to leave prime school without finishing the five years. The higher education has gone through a total revolution since India became independent. The universities and colleges have a high standard. It is also usual that Indian students study abroad after their studies in India.

Entertainment

Dance Almost all kinds of culture in India is connected to religion; this applies particularly to dance. Dance is considered to be that exercise that is the closest to the pray. According to the Hindu creation narrative the god Shiva was shaping this world by dancing his creation and destruction dance. There are old ritualistic dances from the 6th century in India which are known all over the world. The characteristic of those dances is the sign language with hands and eyes and they are usually peformed by women. Many other dances have been based on these old ritualistic dances. One example of a dance is Kathakali witch developed during the 14th and 15th century to honour Shiva. Kathakali dance is almost like a theatre show with costumes. It is only danced by men and they tell stories about the gods e.g. Ramayana and Mahabharata. Music Classical Indian music is known for its difficult rhythm. There is also more modern music in India; it is influenced by the old classical Indian music and western pop music. India has a great film industry whose films contain a lot of film music.

Film industry Bollywood is the Indian counterpart to Hollywood. Bollywood produces more films than the western counterpart. A typical Bollywood film is like a mus...
